So do you think you are good at sport! But can you handle a challenge?

Can you throw a ball? Chest pass, Javelin throw? Can you throw a football ten, twenty, thirty metres? Can you catch one handed, secure the ball, fend off tackles and make a decisive pass? Can you learn team tactics and set plays and be prepared to practise them? Can you catch a ball, get tackled and, whilst holding your breath, hold onto the ball and with your other hand on the water turn your canoe back upright and play on?

Sport at UWE for many is about progressing personal skills already schooled or about learning a new sport in a fairly familiar environment. At UWEcanoe most members find themselves learning how to canoe whilst simultaneously picking up the tactics and game play of Canoe Polo. Previous canoeing ability does not automatically imply a high competitive aptitude, but the ability to throw and catch and to be a team player certainly counts high on the skills list for potential players regardless of prior canoeing experience.

UWEcanoe have the unique position offering BUCS level competition outside of the mainstream sports. Canoe Polo has a one off weekend tournament of competition for separate ladies and mens teams against all the other Universities. UWEcanoe have already notched up several victories against local Unis in regional and open competitions in 2010 and are aiming to expand the squads ready for this years major league competition in April and the varsity to be held in Bristol Docks this May.

With just a couple of hours training per week, we have all the equipment and know how to get you up to speed to play, and you might even find yourself representing UWE at the Nationals!
