UWE Jitsu Club

The Nationals

Twice annually we hold events that are known affectionately as "The Nationals": The Autumn Atemi Nationals and The Spring "Judo" Nationals.

These are our prestige events, attended by clubs from all over the country from Plymouth to Edinburgh. With up to 1000 people training together.

Both are weekend events and have three parts ;

  • Training courses each morning taken by our top Instructors
  • Friendly competitions in the afternoons (heats Saturday /finals Sunday)
  • And the Huge Saturday night party !

The competitions are different at each event.

The Autumn event has only one competition which is much related to the training which we normally do. It is called Atemi and involves defending against continual, multiple, random attacks in "V" or gauntlet formation. Marks are awarded for style and technique.

In the Spring there are two competitions, which further explore the throwing and the grappling side of our art which was developed in to the modern sport of Judo. Funnily enough we call them the Judo Nationals.

  • Nage-waza - throwing techniques
  • Gatami-waza – ground work techniques
