Shorinji Kempo is a traditional Japanese method of training, based on the unity of body and mind. Its teachings cover a complete range of self defence techniques, which encompass a hard system of blocking and striking methods, and a soft system of releasing, taking down, throwing, pinning and arresting methods. The self defence techniques are based on the physiology of the human body, and are complemented with a system of joint and muscle manipulations similar to shiatsu. In addition, Shorinji Kempo training sessions include a period of seated meditation (zazen). The basic philosophy behind Shorinji Kempo is called 'Kongo Zen', and is summarised by its six characteristics, described on the philosophy page.
