California 2008 - Another AMAZING trip! - 01/05/2008

Once again, the club emptied savings accounts and maxed out credit cards for a trip to explore the blue skies above sunny California. This year saw an amazing number of jumpers, new and experienced, turn up, even if they decided to have a nice lie-in and miss the coach to the airport. Tom, was the sleep really worth £160?

During the Days ...

Not sure we could have asked for better results from our students. Having their day of ground training and spending time in the wind tunnel, they were ready to take that First step out of the plane door and all went on to finish the course, with a couple in what must be close to a club record time. The experienced members got going straight away, with freeflying, swooping and a few hybrids in the mix. But it wasn’t just the students learning a new skill, with some of the flat flyers gaining a lot of experience and skills in the art of formation skydiving. As well as the traditional planes, some of the club members were lucky enough to do a hot air balloon jump, if they could manage the early morning that is.

During the Night ...

In typical skydiveUWE style the bar got hit hard every night, the perfect way to recover from a day of jumping and to prepare yourself for the next day. Plenty of beerfine were brought and they were gratefully received. There must be something in the air in California as there was nakedness again. How do you get Barney to get naked? It’s simple, tell him to take his clothes off and SAY you will do the same. The last night was one to remember, heading to San Diego to watch a baseball match before spending the night drinking on a beach having a party.

Other escapades!

After the last couple of years the insurance company must have been dreading seeing the bill we racked up for them, and upholding the club tradition the emergency vehicles came roaring down Goetz Road to our rescue once again, only the one time mind, but whats a skydiveUWE trip without a visit to the hospital and a big insurance bill. Taking time out from jumping a day was spent at the world famous Long Beach, which ironically is really, really long, those crazy Americans and their original names. With other trips including seeing Andy Murray play tennis, visiting San Diego Zoo and Hooters the entertainment came from more places than just the skydiving.
